School Tours 2008

Welcome to Wayne State University Theatres’ 2007 - 2008 touring season. For those who joined us in last year’s journey, welcome back. For those new on the ride, welcome aboard. We hope that for a low cost, we can become a part of your academic year. We are looking forward to working with you and your students.

We would like to offer you an opportunity at both of our tour offerings. For over 20 years, WSU Theatres has brought the play to you. This year’s tour options are No Feare Shakespeare and the Black Theatre Program’s touring company. Tours are available for local schools, churches and social organizations.

For more information or to book a tour, please contact Jessica Bixby, Tour Booking Manager at (313) 577-0852.

No Feare Shakespeare makes the genius of Shakespeare accessible and relevant to young audiences throughout the Metro Detroit area. The plays are meant to be seen, not read, so we create a high-energy, imaginative performance that makes Shakespeare’s stories come to life. Our actors are skilled performers, but also serve as teachers as they answer students’ questions about Shakespeare and live theatre. No Feare Shakespeare aims to present Shakespeare’s plays to students and groups in a creative way that shows how Shakespeare does not have to be intimidating.

Now on Tour:

**A violent storm at sea, twins separated at birth and mistaken identities are just some of the twists and turns in William Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors. The play is a fully mounted, high energy, interactive production of Shakespeare’s actual play that blends elements of commedia dell’arte, clowning and circus skills - all edited to fit within a typical school day class period. This production will show students how to overcome their apprehensions with Shakespeare’s words and language and teach them to “understand” his message.  For more information contact Jessica Bixby at (313) 577-0852.

Plays presented by WSU’s Black Theatre Program explore the black experience in America. Themes and topics covered in these plays include diversity, historical events (e.g., the American Civil Rights Movement, the evolution of the Underground Railroad, the Harlem Renaissance, and the “Middle Passage”), and African-American contributions to technology, science, entertainment and literature. Previous plays include A Woman Called Truth, Buses, Home, The Dream Tunnel and Zora Neale Hurston.

    Now on Tour:

Mrs. Grace Love is a spiritual woman who works for the local Sheriff in a small 1960s town. Her grandson Eugene, a 21-year-old civil rights activist who participates in lunch counter sit-ins, chides his grandmother for working for the very bigots he is protesting against. Yet Mrs. Love maintains that she too is contributing to the cause in her own special way. This play takes an unexpected and humorous twist when we learn of Mrs. Love’s unconventional contribution to the movement.  For more information contact Jessica Bixby at (313) 577-0852.
