Wayne State's Black Theatre Program

Program Overview

With less than a dozen black theatre programs in the country, Wayne State University's Black Theatre Program has grown into one of the most extensive and respected African American Theatre studies programs.  The academic program provides the theoretical and historical foundation for performance and production.  Students may select from among such courses as Introduction to Black Theatre; Blacks and Hispanics in Theatre, Film and Television; and Black Dramatic Theatre.  Other more general courses, such as Introduction to Theatre, Development of Drama, and Theatre History, touch on the history and growth of black theatre.

Mission Statement

The Black Theatre Program (BTP) is an integral part of the Wayne State University Department of Theatre.  The program provides classes and performance opportunities for the University and the Detroit community.  It also supplies production opportunities for local playwrights.  The practice of the program is to explore the black experience in America which necessarily acknowledges other cultures as they impact upon the reality of African American life.  Also, the BTP explores and appreciates the significance of non-western theatre aesthetics.
